Week 5 Garage or Shed
This will be an easy week for some and a nightmare for others. But like all the other weeks, we will take our time to tackle it one day at a time. If your garage is full, we need to figure out why. Do you have a lot of sentimental items (like furniture from loved ones) or is this full of miscellaneous things you don’t know where to put?
Let your goal be to make your garage more functional. I will give you tips along the way that will help you conserve space.
Take a deep breath and let's get started.
Day 1 Today our goal is to give us more space. (30 mins)
TIP: I suggest you set a timer for this one. We tend to get distracted and this will keep us on task. Once the 30 minutes is over, we can look at the things we wanted to check out.
So let's look for things that we can trash. Anything that is broken or that you can not use needs to be thrown away.
Note: Keep your empty boxes if you need them for your donation or sale items
Day 2 and 3 Start organizing (30 mins)
Let’s go through and put things together into groups, for example; sports, lawn care, outdoor items, tools, etc.
Remember to continue to throw things away and put things in your giveaway pile.
TIP: Now that you know what you have figure out where you're going to put things. I suggest you make a plan in writing. That will save you a lot of time.
Day 4 We need to start putting things where they belong.
TIP: Conserve space ideas: Mesh laundry bag for balls and frisbees, use a door shoe organizer for spray paint cans or cleaning supplies, large hooks for hanging bikes, heavy-duty store straps for extension cords, empty spaghetti or salsa jars for nails, screws, etc. (To save space drill the lid to the bottom of the shelf then you can screw and unscrew the jar when you need it).
Day 5 Finish the job!
TIP: Use the sentimental furniture in your house. If you don’t have room for it, give it to a family member or it’s time to give it away. All it's doing is collecting dust. It is sentimental because it gives you memories of your loved one. But if you don’t have it where it's visible, you're just holding on to the past. It’s time for someone else to enjoy the piece.
